My Best Friend’s Wedding 2 Is Happening — But Can It Recapture The Chaos That Made It Iconic?

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) is officially getting a sequel — and yes, Julia Roberts may be back to stir up more romantic sabotage. But in today’s reboot-happy landscape, will this romantic comedy sequel honor the original’s gutsy legacy — or rewrite what made it work?

Sony and TriStar Pictures have confirmed that a follow-up to the 1997 classic My Best Friend’s Wedding, starring Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz, and Rupert Everett, is officially in development. With Past Livesfilmmaker Celine Song tapped to write the screenplay, the project could be far deeper — and riskier — than your average romcom revival.

Casting has yet to be finalized, but reports suggest Roberts and Mulroney are both in talks. If confirmed, it would mark Roberts’ return to one of her most iconic and divisive characters — Julianne Potter.

Celine Song Will Write The Script For My Best Friend’s Wedding 2

Sony’s decision to hand the story to Celine Song, who earned an Oscar nomination for Past Lives (2023), immediately sets this sequel apart from most nostalgia plays. According to People, the new film will explore themes of timing, memory, and adult friendship — a promising direction for a character as emotionally chaotic as Julianne.

Song’s debut was praised for its emotional restraint and slow-burning regret — two things My Best Friend’s Weddingwore like a second skin. If she keeps the tone intimate and honest, this could be the most emotionally grounded romantic comedy sequel of the decade.

Julia Roberts And Dermot Mulroney Are In Talks — But Nothing’s Official

Insiders say Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney are in early talks to reprise their roles as Julianne and Michael. No contracts are signed, but Mulroney has hinted at "unfinished business" in recent interviews, and Roberts has publicly spoken about loving the film’s unconventional ending.

In the original, Julianne tried to sabotage Michael’s wedding after realizing — too late — that she loved him. She failed. The film ended not with romance, but regret. A sequel brings big emotional stakes. If it dares to revisit that fallout without softening Julianne into a redemption arc, it might actually work.

Cameron Diaz’s Return Is Uncertain — But Everett’s Cameo Is A Must

No word yet on whether Cameron Diaz will return as Kimmy Wallace. Diaz has stayed mostly retired, though she recently appeared in Netflix’s Back in Action, making a small cameo here at least possible. Her character was pivotal — she was the romantic lead who didn’t play by genre rules and still got the guy.

Fans are also hoping for the return of Rupert Everett as George, Julianne’s sharp, scene-stealing best friend. His final dance with her wasn’t just comic relief — it was the film’s emotional center. If he’s not back, this sequel risks feeling hollow.

The Original Romcom Worked Because Julianne Lost

My Best Friend’s Wedding wasn’t about winning love. It was about not getting it — and realizing maybe you never deserved it in the first place. Julianne was messy, selfish, and brilliant, and the film didn’t reward her behavior.

That’s what made it unforgettable. A sequel that rewrites that arc — or tries to clean it up — risks undermining the very thing that made the original resonate for 28 years. If this film does anything, it needs to lean into Julianne’s emotional wreckage, not try to fix her.

This Romantic Comedy Sequel Might Actually Be Worth It — If It Doesn’t Flinch

Romcom sequels rarely stick the landing. Bridget Jones’s Baby played it safe. Sex and the City 2 crashed and burned. What My Best Friend’s Wedding 2 has going for it is clarity: it knows the pain it's built on, and now it has a writer capable of digging deeper.

If it avoids tropes, respects the chaos, and refuses to sanitize its heroine — this could be one of the most honest romantic comedy sequels ever made.

My Best Friend’s Wedding 2 is currently in development. No release date has been announced.
